What Has It Been Like to Self-Publish a Book

Early in 2024 I decided to compile a list of essays that I had written – primarily (though not entirely) about living with Parkinson’s. I was motivated by my experience in dealing with the challenges over 21 years, and my success in finding solutions – usually through my writing.
I enlisted the help of my computer-guru son, who guided me through the editing, the designing of the cover and finally the printing. It was much more time-consuming than I expected but it was well worthwhile. I remember the day I held my book in my hands. The sense of accomplishment was incredible.
I began looking at the world of self-publishing and ended up with Amazon. It was infinitely more complicated than I had anticipated and it took a lot longer. I was never concerned about selling. I simply wanted to reach people with Parkinson’s in the hope that the book might be helpul to them.
In the meanwhile I began sending copies to my family, my friends and professional who worked with people with Parkinson’s. I was humbled by the fantastic feedback I received.
What I didn’t realize is that there was no one left in my circle ! How would people who are not in my circle know about the book? Once it was available for purchase (written and digital) I sold a few copies. Most disappointingly, my attempts to spread the word via people who worked in the field met with little success.
After a while I realized that selling was not going to work, so I decided to give the books away. Once again – to whom?
The opportunity to do so came through the local Parkinson’s SuperWalk, where I will be handing out free copies. Reaching people with Parkinson’s was all I ever wanted. And it has spurred me on to revitalize my website and start writing more essays – with open communication between readers and me. Of course my task now is to learn how to attract people to the website!
… which is where you are if you are reading this.
